It was also in 1992 that the Northwestern Law School established a professorship in my name. That action was especially gratifying because it was financed by my classmates.

October Term 1992

On October 6, 1992, we heard the reargument in Bray v. Alexandria Women’s Health Clinic,20 a case that four justices (Rehnquist, White, Scalia, and Kennedy) had voted to grant in February 1991 while Thurgood Marshall was still a member of the Court, and which was argued for the first time in October of 1991 after Clarence Thomas had replaced him. It is obvious that the outcome of the case is attributable to Clarence’s replacement of Thurgood. And I think it appropriate to explain its importance by quoting the following passages from the beginning of my dissent, which Harry Blackmun, Sandra O’Connor, and David Souter joined:
